Pargat Singh Finds Success in Punjab Gold Cup Hockey

Former captain of Indian hockey team Pargat Singh believes that the recently held Punjab Gold Cup hockey tournament has become a success story in terms of creating inspirations among the younger generation. He also insists that in order to attack new generation to hockey, it is necessary to have a good platform. Pargat Singh, who led India in Barcelona Olympics 1992 and Atlanta Olympics 1996, thinks that the new generations of hockey fans wants quality.

The Hindu reported:

“You have to take the game to the people. The spectators should get value for the time and money they spend. This generation wants only quality. If you falter, you lose the audience. My first task is to project the game in a positive manner.

“We can do without needless controversies and concentrate on sustaining the interest that we have managed to generate from this tournament,” said Pargat, who is the Director (Sports), Punjab.

India’s performance in Punjab Gold Cup Hockey was impressive as they ended up winning the runner up trophy after being narrowly beaten 2-1 by Netherlands in a closely-fought final. In the group stage, India held Netherlands twice and lost only one match in the whole tournament.
