Netherlands Wins Punjab Gold Cup Hockey Title Defeating Host India 2-1

After denying Netherlands two wins in the group stage of Punjab Gold Cup hockey tournament, India, at last, failed to maintain their success against the European powerhouse in the final. Netherlands pulled off an excellent 2-1 come-from-back victory today against the home side. India took lead in the 43rd minute thanks to Captain Sandeep Singh’s penalty. India was given the penalty as Shivender Singh was illegally obstructed by Wouter Jolie in the penalty area. The visitors took only three minutes to score the equalizer when Robbert Kemperman’s deflected shot went into Indian post. India got a number of scoring chances but they failed to manage any more goals. In fact, the host teams squandered five penalty corners. Tournament’s highest scorer Hertzberger scored the winning goal for the Dutch team. India held Netherlands to a 4-4 and 2-2 draws in the group stage matches.
