Indian Hockey Team Started Their European Tour with 3-1 Defeat to England

India has got off to an unimpressive start to their European tour as they lost their first match to England 3-1. This was India’s first match under their new Spanish coach Jose Brasa. So, naturally, it was not a good start for the new coach as well. However, the only positive sign of India’s performance was that Indian players could create a number of chances, and had their forwards not missed those chances, the result of the match could have come in India’s favor.

India conceded a goal on the first minute when Ben Hawes scored for England. However, it took 7 minutes for India to equalize when Dhananjay Mahadik scored from India’s first penalty corner. Then England scored the 2^nd goal thanks to Barry Middleton just ten minutes later. Indian players suffered a lot in the first half of the match mainly because of rain which made the turf slippery and the visitors faced many problems in adjusting with the condition. England was leading 2-1 at the halftime.

Rain stopped in the second half and India tried their best to equalize as they created a number of chances. However, England’s Richard Smith scored the 3^rd goal in the 68^th minute, and thus, ensuring an easy victory for the host. Two more matches are left in the three-match test series between India and England.

India Men’s Hockey Team Going to Tour Europe

India men’s hockey team is going to tour Europe during which it will face four European teams in a total 12 test matches. The tour starting on July 27 includes four tests against England, three tests against Belgium and Spain each and two matches against Holland. The 25-day tour will see India playing under new coach Jose Brasa for the first time.

Indian selectors have already announced 24-men squad led by defender Sandeep Singh. Indian team is now training in Pune ahead of the tour. However, team India will miss the service of Dilip Tirkey who is currently suffering from ankle injury.

India’s very recent form is not satisfactory at all as they finished fifth in this year’s Asia Cup in Malaysia. India will host next year’s world cup, and that is why, Indian team wants to gain some experience playing against some of the European giants. Now, let us see if Indian players bring about some satisfactory results in their European tour in what would erase the disappointing memory of Asia Cup to some extent.

NHL Wants Jerry Reinsdorf to Buy Phoenix Coyotes to Keep the Base in Arizona

National Hockey League (NHL) has backed the $148 million bid of Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the cash-strapped Phoenix Coyotes. Even though Jim Balsillie, a billionaire from Canada, earlier made a bid worth $212.5 million to get the ownership of the franchise, NHL still wants Judge Redfield Baum will accept the bid made by Reinsdorf who also owns Chicago White Sox baseball and Chicago Bulls basketball clubs.

NHL wants to keep the Coyotes base in Arizona and this could be possible if Reinsdorf buys the franchise. On the other hand, a Balsillie take-over of the Phoenix Coyotes would move the club base to Canada. Well, it is now down to the court to decide whom the franchise will be sold to. So far, both Reinsdorf and Balsillie have equal chances to buy Phoenix Coyotes.

India Women’s Hockey Team Won Champions Challenge Tournament

India clinched the title of first women’s champions challenge tournament recently defeating Belgium 6-3 in Russia. With this victory, India qualified for Champions Challenge I tournament which will take place in 2011 and the winner of that tournament will take part in the 2012 Champions Trophy.

India was in dominant form throughout the final match, giving no chance to Belgium. The victory came thanks to four goals from youngster Rani Rampal who finished the tournament as the highest scorer and was awarded the Young Player of the tournament award. Rani was also the best player in the final game.

India took lead in the 17^th minute when Rani scored a field goal, just 3 minutes before Saba Anjum scoring the second goal. India was leading 2-0 in the game, but India ensured their victory scoring four goals early in the second half including 3 goals from Rani’s stick. Another goal came from Chanchan Devi. Belgian captain Valerie Vermeersch scored two goals in the 40^th and 52^nd minutes, before Jill Boon scoring the third goal for Belgium in the 55^th minute.

Indian captain Surinder Kaur who had been in excellent form throughout the tournament was given the player of the tournament award.

Pakistan Looking for a World Cup Place without Playing Qualifying Round

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has made an official request to International Hockey Federation (FIH) to increase the number of participating teams in Hockey World Cup 2010 from 12 to 16. In fact, the Hockey World Cup 2002, which held in Kuala Lumpur, featured 16 teams, but FIH later on dropped the number of participants to 12. As of now, the next world cup 2010 will feature 12 teams, but it has been reported that FIH may accept PHF’s request by increasing the number of competing teams in the tournament.

In fact, some of the top PHF officials met FIH president Leandro Negre in Malaysia earlier this month and talked about this matter. If FIH agrees to increase the number to 16, then Pakistan would earn an automatic world cup berth as the second best team from Asia. Pakistan became runner up in this year’s Asia Cup, losing to South Korea in the final. So, South Africa has guaranteed their place in the world cup, while Pakistan would have to go though qualifying round in order to clinch a place in the world cup if the number of team remains 12. However, nothing is confirmed in this regard whether FIH would definitely accept Pakistan’s request.

To be honest, I also think that the number of participating teams should be increased to 16 because field hockey is not yet a very popular game in all parts of the world. So, for the development of the game, FIH should ensure the involvement of as much teams in its elite tournament as possible.

Brett Hull to be Inducted to Hockey Hall of Fame

Brett Hull is going to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on 9 November in Toronto, Canada. The former NHL star has admitted the news and expressed his delight on this regard. Brett will now join his father Bobby Hull who was placed in the hall of fame in 1983 because of his excellent contribution to the game.

Brett Hull, who is currently serving as an executive of Dallas Stars, scored 741 regular season goals during his illustrious career. In 1990-91, Brett was awarded the Hart Trophy as he became the most valuable player in the league, having scored 86 goals that season. So, there is no doubt, Brett deserves to be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

The decision was taken recently as they club is now aiming to settle its financial issues. For example, Rage wants a new ownership agreement as well as needs finances. Moreover, the club is looking forward to getting Broomfield Event Center as their home ground on lease for a longer term. In fact, the club finished its third season at the ground. However, Rocky Mountain Rage has also confirmed that the club would return to action in 2010-2011 season.

It is really very hard for the fans of Rage hockey team because they will miss the actions of the club next season. Phoenix Coyotes Wants to Extend Sale Deadline to 15 September

You already know that NHL franchise Phoenix Coyotes is now struggling financially and is on the verge of losing its Arizona base as Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie wants to buy the club and relocate to Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. Jim Balsillie-owned PSE Sports & Entertainment has made a $212.5 million bid to buy the club and the deadline of accepting any more bids ends on 29 June.

However, Phoenix Coyotes now wants to extend the deadline to 15 September in an attempt to provide other potential bidders some time to launch their bid. This is an attempt to keep the club base in Arizona, USA. However, I think, it would not be easy for the club to find many bidders at this time of global economic recession. One potential bidder could be Jerry Reinsdorf who currently owns the Chicago White Sox baseball club as well as NBA franchise Chicago Bulls.

FIH Accepted Hockey India as a Full Member

Hockey India has been accepted as a full member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) recently. FIH issued a letter addressed to Hockey India stating that it has given the full membership to Hockey India considering it as a sole governing body for hockey (both men and women).

India is going to organize men’s hockey world cup next year. However, there was an uncertainty over the hosting status of India as FIH ruled that India must have a separate formal body for hockey in order to organize world cup 2010. Now, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has recently set up Hockey India as a new governing body for Indian hockey and Hockey India recently applied to retain the full membership of FIH. So, it seems that there is no more problem for India to organize the tournament. Meanwhile, IOA also granted a full membership to Hockey India recently.

International Hockey Federation Congratulated Newly Formed Hockey India

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has recently formed Hockey India, the governing body of hockey in India. International Hockey Federation (FIH) has welcomed the move and congratulated the newly formed body which will control the game in the county. FIH also thanked Suresh Kalmadi, president of IOA, for taking the initiative to set up Hockey India.

FIH has also advised Hockey India president A.K. Mattoo to set up state hockey association for both men and women. After that, FIH would recognize Hockey India as the governing body for both Men’s and Women’s hockey in India. Upon getting this recognition would enable Hockey India to become the formal body to represent hockey in India and would be eligible to organize Men’s Hockey World Cup 2010 which is supposed to take place in India.

Pakistan will not Take Part in Four-Nation Hockey Tournament in Moscow

Pakistan hockey team has followed the footstep of arch-rival India by pulling themselves out of Moscow’s four-nation hockey tournament which is due to take place in Moscow, Russia next month. Pakistan’s withdrawal from the tournament came after India had pulled out of the tournament recently. Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan said that Pakistan would not take part in the competition because there would not be any competitive team without India. The tournament is supposed to feature South Korea and host Russia too.

Pakistan would have taken part in the Moscow tournament only because of the match against India which they would consider as a preparation for world cup qualifying competition which begins in October. However, Pakistan will face England in a three-match test series in June and Pakistan Hockey Federation is trying to organize matches against top ranked teams like Germany, Netherlands and Spain before starting their world cup hockey qualifying campaign. Pakistan failed to qualify for next year’s hockey world cup as they failed to win the Asia Cup 2010 title after being lost to South Korea 1-0 in the tournament final.

Zakir Hussain Syed on Pakistan’s Performance in Asia Cup Hockey 2009

Pakistan failed to ensure their place in the world cup hockey 2010 as they failed to win the Asia Cup Hockey 2009 title. Bangladesh Coach on the Asia Cup Hockey 2009 Performance

You already know that Bangladesh finished 7^th in the seven-team Asia Cup Hockey 2009 tournament which was recently held in Malaysia. Bangladesh’s performance in the tournament was so poor that they conceded 32 goals in four matches. In the first match, they were defeated by Japan 5-0, which was followed by three big margin victories including 7-1 defeat to Malaysia, 9-0 defeat to eventual champion South Korea and then 11-1 defeat to India.

Regarding their poor performance in the most prestigious tournament of Asia, Coach Gerhard Peter Rach said that he had an inexperienced team which lacked skill and was not enough experience of playing at the international level. Mr. Rach, who earlier coached India, has also admitted that Bangladesh hockey team is far behind to the other Asian powers, whom he has termed monsters, in terms of technique, power and psychological strength. South Korea Becomes Asia Cup Hockey 2009 Champion

South Korea has been the new champion of Asia Cup Hockey 2009, defeating Pakistan 1-0 in the final on Saturday. This has been the third Asia Cup title for South Korea after their triumph in 1993 and 1999. South Korea was excellent throughout the tournament as they did not lose any game. The first half was ended in goalless, before Kim Byung-hoon scored from a penalty corner in the 66^th minute.

Pakistan started off well in the match, dominating in the first half. In fact, Pakistan created a number of chances, but Sohail Abbas, Muhammad Tariq and Rehan Butt missed scoring chances. However, the Koreans appeared with their top form in the second half, earning couple of early penalty corners. South Korea did not featured four of their important players including Jang Jong-hyun, and if South Korea lost the game, the coach Cho Myung-jun might have faced huge criticism, but his players justified his decisions clinching the title of the tournament.

India Clinched the 5th Place at Asia Cup Hockey 2009

Indian hockey team might have failed to reach the semi final of the 8^th Asia Cup Hockey tournament, but the men in blue could finish the tournament fifth after defeating Japan 5-1 convincingly today. India earlier defeated Bangladesh 11-1 in the 6^th/7^thplace deciding match, and thus, qualified for the 5^th place deciding match against Japan.

India got off to a good start in the match with Rajpal Singh scoring in the very first minute of the match, before Captain Sandeep Singh scoring the second goal in the 21^stminute. However, Japan decreased India’s lead thanks to a field goal from Hiroki Sakamoto in the 32^nd minute. India was leading 2-1 in the first half. To be honest, neither side performed accordingly, but India played better than Japan.

However, the match was not entertaining anyway. Tushar Khandker increased the lead to 3-1 for India in the 64^th minute, just 3 minutes before Prabhjot Singh scoring the fourth goal of India. Khandker then scored another goal to make it 5-1.

Well, you might think that it was a good performance by Indian team. However, India did not have as much dominance over Japan as the score line might suggest. Still, it was better off to finish at the 5^th place in the tournament. However, I do not see any scope to become happy with the performance of India’s performance. In fact, this has been first time, Indian team failed to reach the semi final of Asia Cup Hockey. They lost to Pakistan in the first match, and most surprisingly India was held to a 2-2 draw by China. In both the games, India conceded late goals to destroy their party and this has been a long-standing problem for the Indian team.

Indian team now has new coach and I think, it would be a challenge for the new coach to solve this problem ahead of next year’s Hockey World Cup 2009 which is all set to take place in India.

India has been crushed out of the ongoing Asia Cup 2009 hockey tournament after being held to a 2-2 draw with China today. With this draw, China has confirmed their progress to the semi final from Pool B. Pakistan had already reached the last four of the tournament after beating arch-rivals India 3-2 in their last match. No doubt, defending champion India’s departure in the tournament has come as a big shock to many hockey fans.

Indian team came to Malaysia with their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup success fresh in mind and they were considered to be host favorite in the tournament. However, the way India has failed to make it to the semi final it reminds me Indian cricket team’s departure from ICC World Cup 2007. Pakistan men’s hockey team defeated India 3-2, and thus, reaching the semi final of Asia Cup 2009 tournament. Pakistan earlier drew with China 1-1 in their tournament opener. Though India took an early lead in the match, Pakistan did not take long to equalize before taking leads in subsequent goals. It was an exciting affair between the two arch-rivals as both sides played attacking hockey throughout the match.

With this victory, Pakistan has taken a sweet revenge of their defeat to India in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament. In order to make it to the semi final, India now has to win over China in their last pool match. However, it would not be very easy for Team India as China also played attacking hockey in their first match against Pakistan and held them to a 1-1 draw.

India is the defending champion in the competition as they won the 7^th Asia Cup event at their home ground in 2007. Naturally, India was considered to be the most favorite for the tournament, given India’s recent excellent performance. India recently won the title of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Malaysia, before winning a hockey test series against New Zealand on New Zealand soil. So, it would be a huge disappointment for Indian hockey fans as well as for the players, if India fails to get into the last four of the tournament.

Asia Cup 2009 campaign of Pakistan starts off today (Saturday) with Pakistan facing China in the tournament opener in Malaysia. After poor performance in last month’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Malaysia, Pakistan is now gearing up to bounce back strongly in the Asia Cup 2009 tournament.

Pakistani cricket fans can expect something impressive from their men’s hockey team in Asia Cup hockey tournament as a number of senior players, who were missing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament, have joined Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad. Bangladesh men’s hockey team has arrived in Kuantan, Malaysia where Asia Cup 2009 hockey tournament is scheduled to take place from 9 May to 16 May. Bangladesh team, led by striker Rasel Mahmud Jimmy, would play their first match against Japan on 9 May. Bangladesh has been drawn in Pool A alongside Japan, South Korea and host Malaysia. The seven team tournament also features defending champion India, Pakistan and China. Sir Lanka pulled out of the tournament in the last minute, and thus, making it a seven-team tournament. So, Pool B incorporates 3 teams including India, Pakistan and China. Top two teams from each pool would go into the semi final stage.

Bangladesh has declared a balanced squad. Bangladesh would definitely be looking to make it to the last four. Bangladesh won the AFC Cup 2008. So, Bangladeshi players would like to replicate their success in Asia Cup 2009.

Jose Brasa: The New Coach of Indian Hockey Team

Ahead of Asia Cup 2009 hockey tournament, Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) has appointed Jose Brasa as the permanent coach of Indian men’s hockey team. Brasa has good coaching record as the Spaniard guided Spanish women’s hockey team to win the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. After the resignation of Joaquim Carvalho last March as Indian hockey team coach, IHF appointed Australia’s Ric Charlesworth as the technical advisor. However, Charlesworth also left the job following a rift with hockey federation officials and sports ministry. Then Harendra Singh took over as stand-in coach and guided India to reach the final of Punjab Gold Cup and win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Malaysia recently.

The first assignment for Jose Brasa would be the upcoming Asia Cup 2009 which kicks off from May 6 in Kuantan, Malaysia. India hockey team has shown enough improvement on the field after a disappointing 2008 during which India failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games for the first time in 80 years. Tengku Abdullah, president of Malaysia Hockey Federation, has said that fitness will be a key factor for Malaysia in the upcoming Asia Cup 2009 hockey tournament to be held in Kuantan, Malaysia from 9 May to 16 May. Malaysia has recently become runners up in Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup at home, losing to India in the final. Now, Malaysian players are gearing up to do better in Asia Cup in front of the home fans.

Indian hockey is current run by an ad-hoc committee under the guidance of IOA.

Well, India’s recent performance on the field is pretty much impressive as they became runners up in the Punjab Gold Cup earlier this year and then defeated New Zealand 2-0 in a 4-match test series held in New Zealand. Recently, India won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey tournament in Malaysia. Overall, Indian hockey team has been in good form of recent and it looks they are improving gradually. India Clinched Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament 2009 Defeating Malaysia 3-1

India has won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament defeating host Malaysia 3-1 in the tournament final. With this victory, India clinched their fourth title in the tournament after their previous success in 1985, 1991 and 1995. For Malaysia, it was their third defeat in the tournament final and they are naturally disappointed for not being able to win their home tournament for the first time.

Malaysia started off better in the match as they squandered off two scoring chances in the first four minute. However, India was put ahead in the 8^th minute when Arjun Halappa’s cross was deflected by Malaysian player Baljit Singh before sliding into the post. Just 3 minutes later, Malaysia clinched an equalizer when Azlan scored from short range.

India took lead again in the 20^th minute when Gurbaj Singh’s shot deflected off Prabhjot Singh into the goal. Nine minutes later, India could increase the lead, had Prabhjot Singh’s shot not gone wide off the target. India ensured their victory thanks to a 41-minute goal from Shivender Singh. Malaysia had their chances squandered off in the second half when they failed to capitalize on the two penalty corners on the 53^rd and the 67^th minute.

Meanwhile, New Zealand won the third place in the tournament defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the third place deciding match. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has congratulated Indian hockey team for the success.

Seibu were unable to maintain their operations with attendances slumping amid an economic downturn which already has claimed several big-name victims in Japanese sport.

Rabbits owners Prince Hotel said they had failed to find a buyer despite holding talks with more than 20 interested parties.

Seibu's pullout leaves the AIHL without a team based in Tokyo. Three of the remaining clubs are Japanese with two from South Korea, along with the Shanghai-based China Sharks.

Surely a bad news and there is nothing to be done except to hope that we do not have to hear more bad news regarding the recession.

Indian field hockey team drew 2-2 with Netherlands in a group stage match of Punjab Gold Cup Hockey tournament. Netherlands twice took lead in the match, but India came back on both occasions, but the man for whom India could save defeat was goalkeeper Baljit Singh who saved denied the visiting side a number of goals throughout the match.

Jeroen Hertzberger put Netherlands ahead with his 32nd-minute goal. However, India equalized soon after the first half thanks to Shivender Singh who scored from a Vikram Pillai pass. In the 50th minute, the Dutch side took lead once again in the match with Geert-Jan Derikx scoring the second goal. Six minutes later Prabhjot Singh equalized for India. Netherlands had some real chances towards the end of the match, but the excellent goalkeeping by Baljit confirmed a point for India from the match. With this draw, both India and Netherlands are very close to clinch a spot in the tournament final.

In the opening match of the Punjab Gold Cup Hockey tournament, India men’s hockey team defeated New Zealand 2-0 at the Sector 42 hockey stadium, Chandigarh in India. The four-nation tournament has begun today with the host team taking on strong Kiwis and got off to a good start with a convincing victory. From the very beginning of the match, India dominated over New Zealand, and new Captain Sandeep Singh scored the first goal in the 18^th minute from the second penalty corner. New Zealand never looked confident following that goal and they failed to come back in the match. India doubled their lead in the 61^st minute when Shivender Singh scored from a Sandeep pass.

The victory must have boost up their confidence level before they meet Olympic champion Germany in their second match of the tournament. Netherlands is the other team in the tournament.

Indian Hockey Federation Released 2009 Calendar for Indian Hockey Team

Indian hockey team will have a very tight schedule in 2009 as is suggested by the 2009 calendar published recently. The full year schedule for 2009 has been approved by the ad hoc committee of Indian hockey federation. India’s packed schedule kicks off from Jan 31 with the four-nation Punjab Gold Cup tournament stating in Chandigarh. In February, India will visit New Zealand for a four-test series which will be followed by Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia in April. India’s next tournament will be 8th Asia Cup which begins on May 8 in Dubai. India will tour Europe in July-August to play tests against England, Belgium, Spain and Holland. Before the Champions Trophy in December, India will host a number of hockey powerhouses like Australia, Germany and Spain in test series during October and November.

India failed to qualify for last year’s Beijing Olympic Games which was the first of such instance in the history of Indian hockey. So, Indian Hockey Federation seems to be desperate to ensure Indian team plays hockey all through the year. Indian Boys Won Silver, Girls Won Bronze in AYOF

Indian boys hockey team lost to Australian boys 2-1 in the final of Australian Youth Olympics in Sydney recently. Thus, India’s boys hockey team won silver medal from the tournament. Australia won the match thanks to a golden goal from Jason Donohoe. It was a highly competitive final which was full of excitement. After the defeat, Indian coach A.K. Bansal expressed his disappointment, saying that he had not expected to lose the match against Australia. India Men’s Hockey Team Reaches Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF)

Indian men’s field hockey team has made it to the final of the ongoing Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF), defeating Great Britain 6-1 pretty comfortably in the second league match of the four-team U-21 tournament. Captain Diwakar Ram and Pramod Kumar scored twice each, while Danish Mujtaba and Jaykaran scored once each. Britain started off well in the match, but all went in vain when Indian players started to score goals. Nick scored the only goal for Britain.

Despite the inspirational performance from men’s team, India’s youth women’s team failed to reach the title being defeated by host Australia 3-2 in the second league match. Women’s team also lost the first match of the competition. Before the tournament final, India men’s hockey team will face Malaysia in the third league match on Saturday. There was a time when Hockey was the Symbol of pride in India. In fact, field hockey is the national sport of world’s second most-populated country. However, it has been many years since India lost its dominance in world hockey. India won Olympic Gold medal on eight occasions when the game was played in grass field, but since the emergence of synthetic turf, India started losing its glory, and now, hockey in India is on the verge of losing its status as the country’s national sport. India even failed to qualify for Beijing Olympic Games 2008.

I got really shocked to know that even some of the former legends of Indian hockey are also claiming that the hockey does not deserve the status of national sports. There are a number of sports like shooting, boxing, Snooker and billiards which are bringing fame and titles for India from international level. Cricket is perhaps the most popular sport in India. So, it is clear that hockey is struggling to hold on to its status as national sport of the country.

Pakistan’s Javed Hockey Club is going to face Delhi’s Punjab and Sind Bank in the final of Silver Jubilee Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament. The final match will take place at the Olympian Surjit Singh hockey stadium in Jalandhar. Javed Hockey Club reached the final defeating Mumbai’s Indian Oil 3-1 in the semi final, while Punjab and Sind Bank saw off another Mumbai team Air India by 2-1 score line.

Ric Charlesworth Takes over as Head Coach of Australian Men’s Hockey Team

Just two months after resigning as India's technical director, Ric Charlesworth has taken over as the head coach of Australian men’s hockey team. He has been appointed as the successor of Barry Dance who quit after Beijing Olympic Games. Charlesworth represented Australia and captain his team as a player. Later he coached Australian women’s hockey team and led the girls to win Olympic Gold medals at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games.

It would not be an easy task this time at the helm of men’s team because a number of players retired after this year’s Olympic Games in Beijing. Even he admitted that he has to rebuild Australian men’s hockey team who has been losing their dominance in world field hockey.

"The team changes all the time and the team which played in Beijing will never play together again," Charlesworth said.

"The job really is about building a new team and only a handful of the players playing now will be under 30 at the next Olympics."

I think, he is a good choice as the coach of Australian men’s field hockey team who are not at their prime at this moment. Now, let us see if Ric Charlesworth can bring Australian team back to their dominating form with his skill, talent and experience as a coach.

Germany clinched men’s hockey gold at Beijing Olympic Games 2008 defeating Spain 1-0 in the final match. Christopher Zeller scored the winner for Germany in the 16^th minute of the match. With this victory, Germany won their first hockey gold medal since 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

Australian hockey legend Ric Charlesworth has stepped down from Indian field hockey team’s technical advisor post stating that he is not happy with the way Indian hockey is running on. Indian Olympic Association secretary-general Randhir Singh admitted Charlesworth’s unhappiness with the system of Indian hockey and also said that they tried to convince him to stay with Indian hockey team.

Ric Charlesworth is a man of versatile quality. Himself as a great player, he was part of Australia’s 1986 world cup winning team. Upon his retirement in 1988, Charlesworth stepped into coaching and led Australia’s women’s hockey team to become one of the best squads ever in the history of the sport. Charlesworth also played first class cricket for Western Australia.

Australia won the title of Champions Trophy Field Hockey defeating Spain 4-1 in the final of the tournament. Five minutes into the first half, Desmond Abbott put Australia ahead in the match. However, Xavi Ribas brought the equalizer for Spain five minutes later. Australia had to wait till 52^nd minute of the match in order to get the lead once again in the match thanks to a goal by Jamie Dwyer from a penalty stroke. Just eight after the second goal, Austria increased the lead to 3-1 as Eddie Ockenden scored. Eli Matheson scored the last goal for Australia in the penultimate minute of the match. This is the ninth Champions Trophy Field Hockey title for Austria.

Argentina defeated Netherlands 5-3 in penalty shootout after the match ended in 2-2 draw to claim the third place in Champions Trophy Field Hockey tournament. Germany secures the fifth place thanks to the 3-1 victory against South Korea in the fifth and sixth place deciding match.

However, New Zealanders also created some challenges for Pakistan. Indian Olympic Association Takes over Indian Hockey Federation following a Bribery Scandal

Indian male hockey team has failed to qualify for the upcoming Beijing Olympics Games 2008. This is the first time India has failed to book a place at the final of Olympic Games Hockey competition since field hockey included in Olympic Games in 1928. This is not that the disaster has hit the Indian Hockey suddenly. In fact, over the last decade, Indian hockey was going down as their performance at international stage was being faded. Once dominating Indian hockey team is now fighting to revive its lost pride and prowess.

Added to that, recently a high official of Indian Hockey Federation has been accused of taking bribe on a team selection. Even, this is not something new to IHF as the federation has been reportedly going through corruption over the past decade. In the aftermath of these series of blows Indian hockey received recently, Indian Olympic Association (IOC) has recently taken over the Indian Hockey Federation.

Indian Hockey Federation official Kumaraswamy Jothikumaran resigned last week after a television channel claimed to have filmed him accepting a cash bribe to include a player in the national squad.

On Monday, Kalmadi said Olympic rules empowered his body to take action against "member-associations involved in any undesirable activity bringing disrepute to the country."

"The IOA has taken a concrete action following media reports about corruption," Kalmadi said. "It's a painful decision we had to make."

Well, it is for sure that Indian hockey has come to a dead end from its once dominating form. So, it is badly needed to ensure there is no corruption in the hockey federation. However, taking over the IHF is not everything to develop the Indian hockey and revive its pride at the international stage. In fact, concerned authority must have a long term planning for the development of Indian hockey. I hope, Indian hockey gets back its dominance and becomes a major power in world hockey again.

United States Lost the Second Match of Olympic Qualifying Men’s Hockey Tournament

After the 1-9 humiliating defeat to Argentina in the first match, United States suffered another big margin defeat on Sunday in the Olympic men’s hockey qualifying tournament. This time the opposition was France. Argentina and New Zealand also won their respective matches over Trinidad and Tobago and Ireland respectively.

In the 4-7 loss, United States also had chance to win the match as they were leading 4-3 at one stage in the second half. India will play their first match against Mexico, who has replaced Egypt following their withdrawal due to financial constraints. Canada has maintained their impressive run at the inaugural world women’s U-18 hockey championship. Canada has recently roared past Germany projecting a 10-1 victory. Bangalore Hi-Fliers and Chandigarh Dynamos are the two finalists of the Premier Hockey League in India. The first of the best of three finals will be held today. Both the teams confident to win the trophy though both the teams have admitted that the team plays better will be the winner of the final.

Missy Meharg and Tjerk van Herwaarden Received USA Field Hockey Accreditation

Missy Meharg has received accreditation of USA Field Hockey highest coaching. She is the head coach of Maryland. Tjerk van Herwaarden also got the same accreditation recently. So, they have been invited to take part in the USFHA Level III accreditation course for the first time. So, this is good news for Maryland.

The tournament will start from January 22 including Pakistan and Belgium. Indian will later declare 22 or 24 names for the final squad of the competition. All the teams will face each other twice and then two teams with highest points will play in the final.

Indian chief coach, Joaquim Carvalho, who released the list of probables, said on Friday that the 29 players picked for the camp have to prove themselves to gain a berth in the final team for the three-nation tourney.

Carvalho said the final team will have either 22 or 24 players.

Pakistan and Belgium, who have already qualified for the Beijing Olympics in August, are the other teams for the January 22-30 tournament.
